Well, the best was back in 1995 and that was in the Writer's Bar of Raffles Hotel, Singapore. Didn't write a diary then nor did I have have a digital camera either but I do remember that the food and the service were divine. Talked about it to everybody when I got home. They had a novel idea too; instead of buying wine by the bottle, you could have one different glass of wine with each of the six courses and they were not your average cheap house wines either. What I do remember was the dessert wine was Chateau Rieussec, a top class Sauternes. I am not usually a fan of sweet wines but this was luscious so I cheekily asked for another glass and got one at no extra charge.
The 2nd best was in the Spice's Restaurant of the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi in 2007. Again, the service and the food were superb and I particularly remember the melt in the mouth duck breast fillets.
If you look in the picture, you can see that the rice came sealed in a clay crock (vaguely like a rugby ball) which you broke open with a mallet. Anyone have any idea how they do this ?
Now I usually dislike music in restaurants especially that Muzak crap but this meal was accompanied by a beautiful lady playing a local single string instrument. I think she used the lever on her left and her fingers to control the notes.
Well, I did try to load a video of her playing - all 61 MB but I kept getting that 'could not not contact Blogger.com' message so after 90 minutes or so I have given up. Needless to say that having canceled the upload, the problem has disappeared.
