The Judiciary

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Oh for sure, they often appear to be pompous old buggers, frequently out of touch with the real world. I think it was many years ago when one judge was heard to ask, 'Who is Bo Diddley?'
But I love them even if I do not always agree with them. I love them for their independence (well, here and in the USA at least) and their ability to tell the Government to sod off and stop playing 'silly buggers'.
We had a good one a week ago when the High Court decreed that it was unlawful to deny 'right of abode' in the UK to those Gurkhas who had served in the British Army prior to July 1997. I won't bore you with the details but it's all very simple to me and seemingly so for the judges. If you fight for a country in its regular army, then surely you have a right to live there.
