Barack Obama

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

So he's won. And notwithstanding my earlier comments, I think that is great. It's taken around 40 years for a black person to move from segregation and legitimised discrimination to the White House. I do hope that he does well. He must do well for two reasons:

- the world needs a decent, strong, able US president
- he must do as well or better than his white predecessors to dispel the prejudices of the bigots

I said earlier that my fear is that he will be another Jimmy Carter. I hope I am wrong.

But that's for the future. Right now, let us rejoice in this victory for once again, America has shown the world that it is still the country of 'can do' and that's a darn sight more than you can say of most of its detractors.
